What is your child most interested in? Forest ecology? Plant identification? Wildlife exploration? These topics--and many more--are at the heart of Front Door Outdoor.
Classes cover a variety of fascinating subjects--including biology, chemistry, astronomy, physics, and earth science--and are taught in two-hour blocks. Students explore these concepts through interactive lessons and hands-on activities--such as touching samples and playing games--and each student receives a FDOD Field Journal for their coursework, which includes a "Classport" to track their progress.
These classes are taught in parks around Portland, which adds to the atmosphere and learning process, lets students appreciate nature in new ways, and keeps Front Door Outdoor truly rooted in the community. Some of the class locations include Sellwood Park, Laurelhurst Park, Forest Park, Colonel Summers Park, and others. In the event of rain, classes will be held under covered spaces in the park, but students should always prepare for the elements. Have a suggestion for a great natural space in Portland? Please don't hesitate to email Julie.
Front Door Outdoor seeks to make each lesson meaningful and engaging to individual students. For that reason, we aim to have between 5-15 students in each class. The intimate size allows students more individual attention and a close group of peers to learn with and from.
Check the Calendar tab for complete details on different classes. Because the Calendar is updated regularly, check back often to see if a particular class is available, or email Julie directly to request a subject or class. Students are encouraged to pick and choose the courses most interesting to them, which creates a personalized experience tailored to each student’s interests and schedule.
The intent here, is to make science a part of a child's everyday life. When I was in elementary school, I saw the world around me, but I didn't know how to ask questions about it; I didn't know how to find resources to help me branch out into it. I wanted to learn more science than what my school was able to offer, and have since dedicated much of my time to develop this program for students today who can relate. It may have taken years to make real, but here I am, and here is Front Door Outdoor.
This is not a one time field trip into the woods, this is science at your doorstep.
